I've been receiving phone calls from this number and 2 others that are the same people - (844) 842-6203 and (626) 470-7383 - for about 2 weeks, claiming and implying legal action will be taken against a relative of mine in another state for a delinquent bill. I've returned every call I've received to ask them to stop calling me, since I am not the person they are looking for, telling them I will file a complaint with the Attorney General of my state if they don't stop the harassing phone calls. After they called again yesterday, I went ahead and began that complaint process. It turns out the Attorney General no longer takes these complaints, the Federal Trade Commission does under the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau. Here's what I learned and how I filed my complaint...
It is against federal law for debt collectors to threatened or imply legal action against you or your family members. If they are or do, it is more than likely a SCAM. These businesses are required by federal law to provide you with their name, business name, address and most importantly, their PROFESSIONAL LICENSE NUMBER AND STATE that it is issued in and that they are doing business from. If they cannot and do not provide you with all the above, they are breaking Federal Law and you can file a complaint against them.
Call the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (877) 382-4357, #3 will connect you with the correct consumer complaint specialist to file a complaint if it is a SCAM. If you are being harassed by a legitimate business and debt collector, the number is (855) 411-2372 #2, to file a complaint. The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau are all lovely and extremely helpful people.
By the way, definitely file a complaint, the more complaints they receive about the people the better it is for everyone. Let's get rid of these dangerous people trying to prey on vulnerable people.
