I just call from this number - it was an automated message telling me they could lower my credit card interest rate on my "Consumer Services Credit Card". Told me to press option 1 to be connected to an agent. Whoever answered was definitely at a call center - lots of noise in the background. The agent spoke with an accent (most likely India). Rambled on that he was the one person in the company that my call was routed to for "verification purposes" and if I could just verify my credit card number he could lower my interest rate. When I asked what company he was with he said he worked with all major credit card companies and he rattled off the top ones (Capital One, Chase, Bank of America, US Bank, etc). He kept asking if I had a credit card that started with the number '4' - and if so I just needed to confirm the rest of the numbers so he could "verify my identity". I replied, "yes" and then he gave me the next number - when I asked him for the last four digits he said I would need to give him those to verify my identity. He kept saying I needed to verify my identity so he could lower my interest rates. The only credit card on which I carry a balance is my credit union card and the interest rate is 7.9% FOREVER. He insisted he could get it lower if I'd just give him the full number to 'verify my identity'.
Long story short, I eventually, kindly, hung up. He wouldn't give me any information, he said, until he was able to verify my identity. I hung up and called my credit card companies to get new cards. So scary how shady these kinds of calls can be - and so scary how many people fall for it. DON'T be a VICTIM! NEVER EVER give out ANY personal information to a company that has called YOU!! Ask them for a name, phone number and employee ID and tell them you'll call them back with the information. All of my banks and credit card companies say they will never call me and ask ME to verify my numbers.
