Sex-Line Caller Used Phones At 2 Churches

GRINNELL, Iowa - Some 900 numbers for sex-fantasy lines had two new customers recently - St. Mary's Catholic Church and First Baptist Church.

Officials at the central Iowa churches discovered a total of more than $3,000 in calls were made to the sex-fantasy lines.

No one was more surprised than the Rev. Anthony Farrell, pastor at St. Mary's. He opened a monthly phone bill, which is usually around $150, and discovered charges totaling $2,400.

"Heavenly days!" Farrell said.

Kevin Larsen, 25, was charged with second-degree theft for making the calls on church telephones, police said.

Many of the calls at St. Mary's were made in an upstairs sacristy.

At First Baptist, someone made about $900 in calls to the fantasy lines, using a phone in the kitchen while the church was open for a Boy Scout meeting.

"One time, the scoutmaster tried to use the phone because one of the kids was sick, but the man wouldn't let him. The scoutmaster thought he was a member of the church," office secretary Sandi Brooke said.
