The usual - 5 rings and gone before the voice mail picks up. Like most of you I don't answer unidentified calls. However some of you here on 800 Notes have been asking an interesting question; "Why can't the phone company do something to stop these calls?"
As you may be aware, UPS drops some small residential packages at the local US Post Office for final delivery, thereby freeing up their trucks to handle larger, commercial packages and the deliveries that are closer together. The big brown trucks save time and fuel and the USPS, since it runs those routes every day anyway, gets a bit more revenue per run. UPS pays USPS a fee for this service which is referred to as "the last mile." Most of the scam calls originate on VOIP networks overseas. These calls have to get off the internet and onto US landline and cell phone networks in order to ring our home and cell phones. I wonder if the VOIP networks pay the local landline telephone and cell companies a fee for "the last mile"? If so, we now know why they won't do anything about it. Judging by call volume, they're making TONS of money delivering these scam calls to our phones. Just thinkin'......
