This number called and left a mssg saying that the IRS has issued an arrest warrant for me. And that I need to call them ASAP pertaining to the legal matter. First of all, this call came from New York, I have never been to new York in my life. And I am not sure if the IRS can issue arrest warrants for people anyway. Let alone have a robo-caller leave a message saying so. It is a scam. There was no name, no other info pertaining to this number.

Calls multiple times a day, leaves same message as others have noted here. Claims to be IRS, says there is a warrant on me. Obvious scam.

I called the number back and asked if I had reached the Crime Investigation Unit, and when they said yes, I said the following:''As an IRS agent, I'm sure you are aware of my right to record this conversation with your permission. Do I have your permission to record our conversation?" She said yes, so I said, "OK, I am beginning recording...NOW. Can I please ask what agent I am speaking with?"

She answered "Katrine" (let me note, this was not an American speaking, in case you hadn't guessed that already!) Then she asked for my name. I said, "Well, I'll give you my phone number, and I assume you can identify me from that." I gave my number, she said my name, and I confirmed that's me.

She then said, "What can I do for you?" I said, "I think you need to tell me what I can do for you, since you called me."
She waited a second and asked if we were still recording. I said yes. She then said, "I'm sorry, I think there was an error, goodbye" and hung up.

I hope this gets my name off their call list. PS - I wasn't recording anything. Just told them I was and that was good enough to do the trick. :)

The REAL IRS has a form on their website where you can report these scam calls. I filled it out and submitted it - the more people bring it to their attention, the better.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.  IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government.     Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes.  Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks or Itunes cards or similar for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.   All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
