Maybe this scammer is "crazy like a fox". By spoofing an obviously spoofed number, he's "pre-screening" his potential victims. Anyone who doesn't notice the impossible number, is more likely to overlook other flaws in his scam. Good con artists don't just pick their marks randomly, they look for easy prey.
They called at 9:38 a.m. Automated message stated that it was my last chance to increase the credit limit on my credit card. Press 1 to speak to someone about this, so I did, and asked to be taken off of their list. The fellow at the other end, said "Okay" and just hung up on me.
