called and woke me up at 1am, call is from california, left a voicemail, it was a recorded message about hang up and enter my access code on Viber.... no idea how they got my number, and I live in Ontarion Canada. 8 minutes earlier I received a text message from a different number giving me a different viber access code, I googled Viber today, its a text service? Go away Viber.
Viber is a cell phone app that lets you make free calls over your cell using the internet. The app is free and so is the basic service.
They send a SMS (text) from 650-618-9523, with a four digit confirmation number to your phone during the easy activation process.
You and anyone you want to call must have the activated app. You both must have WiFi or internet connection for it to work. So, a person could be half way around the world and talk to you free as long as both of you are internet connected at the time.
It works just like your phone and seems to sound just as good.
Many reasons to have it...you are out of cell minutes, cell towers not working; ie, 9/11 or Katrina, or Sandy.
Didn't sign up with Viber?
When someone with a Viber account (free) wants to reach someone who doesn't have a Viber account, the account holder enters your number and presses a button "invite" and you get sent a text message or a phone call.
All that's happening is someone you know wants to hook up with via a free call on Viber!! The account holder's phone number is the Viber ID.
