So today i got a voicemail on my cell phone from a Lieutenant Lynn Taylor with the DEA.  She indicated she was calling about a package I ordered online, and that she had a search warrant to search my apartment (knew i lived in an apartment and not a house -i guess bc i have an nyc cell number) and a warrant for my arrest.  She asked that i call her back "urgently."  I did, and got a legit-sounding voicemail.  I left a message stating i was returning her call, but that i couldn't imagine what her call was in reference to.  I didn't leave any other info on her vm, only that i would be "happy to help clear up what seems like a mistake."  Then, feeling suspicious since i don't think the DEA typically makes a practice of tipping off suspects before they pounce, i googled the DEA and called the NY Field Office.  I told the answering agent that i got a call from a Santa Ana, CA number from a lt. Lynn Taylor, and could he please connect me.  He told me to ignore it, this is a well-known scam that the DEA and FBI are investigating, and that there is no DEA agent named Lynn Taylor.

He went on to tell me this is a shake-down gang that uses throw-away cell phones to make these calls.  They set up a legit-sounding voicemail box so that return callers get worried. I asked him what the hell these scammers are accomplishing, and he says they'll typically tell you that you've been implicated in an online drug purchase felony, but that you can avoid prosecution by paying a fine.  Then they'll give you wire instructions that have generally been for an account in the Dominican Republic.  And people actually send them money!!!  Finally,he confirmed what i already knew: the DEA would never tip you off that they were planning to search your property and arrest you.

Personally, i am waiting with bated breath for this Lt. To call me back.  Otherwise, I'm going to keep calling her.  Im going to tell her that i have 10k in cash at my apartment waiting for her, if she can make my problem "go away."  Then i'll see if i can meet her with the police.  Or I'm going to turn the tables and say I'm an agent with IC3, and thank goodness she called because i actually have a warrant for HER arrest and that i've been working with the FBI and Interpol and we've locked coordinates on her using GPS.  Clearly i have way too much time on my hands, but i hope i get the opportunity to [***] with them back!

ALERT - EXTORTION SCAM - ALERT
DEA Warns Public of Extortion Scam by
DEA Special Agent Impersonators
The Drug Enforcement Administration is warning the public about criminals posing as DEA special agents or other law enforcement personnel as part of an international extortion scheme.

The criminals call the victims (who in most cases previously purchased drugs over the lnternet or by telephone) and identify themselves as DEA agents or law enforcement officials from other agencies.  The impersonators inform their victims that purchasing drugs over the lnternet or by telephone is illegal, and that enforcement action will be taken against them unless they pay a fine.  In most cases, the impersonators instruct their victims to pay the "fine" via wire transfer to a designated location, usually overseas.  If victims refuse to send money, the impersonators often threaten to arrest them or search their property.  Some victims who purchased their drugs using a credit card also reported fraudulent use of their credit cards.

Impersonating a federal agent is a violation of federal law.  The public should be aware that no DEA agent will ever contact members of the public by telephone to demand money or any other form of payment.

The DEA reminds the public to use caution when purchasing controlled substance pharmaceuticals by telephone or through the Internet.  It is illegal to purchase controlled substance pharmaceuticals online or by telephone unless very stringent requirements are met.  And, all pharmacies that dispense controlled substance pharmaceuticals by means of the lnternet must be registered with DEA.  By ordering any pharmaceutical medications online or by telephone from unknown entities, members of the public risk receiving unsafe, counterfeit, and/or ineffective drugs from criminals who operate outside the law.  In addition, personal and financial information could be compromised.

Anyone receiving a telephone call from a person purporting to be a DEA special agent or other law enforcement official seeking money should refuse the demand and report the threat.

I just got this message from Lt. Lynn Taylor, who claimed to be a DEA agent. She stated that "I am under arrest and the DEA is coming to search my house and arrest my spouse." She addressed me by my correct name. I told her that I'll make some tea and cookies. These people are a joke. It's about time that the authorities did something about this. I mean with all the spying that the government is doing on its citizens you would think that finding out who these people are would be quite easy.

I got a message today (6-12-13) from Lynn Taylor. Could hear a child in the background. Search warrant for me and arrest warrant for husband.  I got one of these calls before and called the DEA office.  No such person.  They do not conduct business that way.
