My daughter called in a panic a few minutes ago.  She said an agent from the IRS , Steve Martin (who had a definite accent), called her regarding her taxes for 2010 & 2011.  He said she was facing 20 years in jail and a $20,000 fine.  He ended his call using the name Steve Jackson.  Obviously even HE doesn't know who HE is!!!

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.

IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

It's not funny.   These Indian and Pakistani callers are hard core scammer/extortionists.  The pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community.  Sometimes they even try to impersonate local police.  Women tend to fall for the scam more than men, it seems.  About the only thing you can do is invest in a call blocker.

These Indian and Pakistani callers are scammer. I have gotten a few calls like this. (661) 771-9313. Sometimes they even try to impersonate local police, stating that there going to come arrest me if I don't comply with them. The other time they actually left a message on my phone, said his name was Steve Martin with an Indian/Pakistani voice! He is with the Treasury Dept. that it was a federal crime RE: retirement plans I had and some thing about taxes and spupoir Court.
About the only thing you can do is investigate Phone Number and put a call blocker on these scammers.
I would hope some day soon a cyber internet cop could track and stop these people.
We really need more cops for today’s internet issues.
