Today in Feb. 6th, 2012. I received this call at 1:44 pm. He stated that he was with the North Carolina Fire Fighters Association. Like Girl Scouts have cookies, they are having a concert @ the Bojangles Coliseum on April 21st, 2012. I asked who would be playing. He then asked me If I've ever heard of the Temptations?
I played along with this fellow, while I googled Temptation Concerts-None on North Carolina, never mind the Bojangles Coliseum..SCAM SCAM SCAM. SCAM SCAM SCAM
I REPORTED THIS NUMBER TO THE FTC-FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION.

GIVING A BAD REP TO FIRE FIGHTER ASSOCIATIONS ALL OVER NC. PLUS THE POOR TEMPTATIONS WILL GET BAD PUBLICITY. BOJANGLES WILL END UP WITH PEOPLE GOING TO A NONE EXISTANT CONCERT!

Yes.. please donate directly to the organization.  You will indeed, cut out the middle man.  Unfortunately it is illegal for firefighters to get on the phone and ask for donations to help support the many 'non-tax funded' programs that our brave firefighters are giving their free time to support.  That is the only reason that the firefighters hire a fundraising company to call on their behalf.  Unfortunately, it has proven impossible in the past, for the firefighters to seek out volenteers to spread the word throughout the community and the laws that follow.  Which is why, they ask us to call on all the brave folks here in our community and ask for their support in these life saving programs.

In the end, the ends justify the means...

I am an elderly retiree and pay AT&T through the nose to have a telephone as a safety net for emergency use, with a surcharge for keeping my number unpublished. I am well aware that bona fide charities are exempt from DNC prohibitions (so, alas, are political parties), but there is a distinctly grey area of surrogate contractors who, while they may forward a percentage of revenue collected for legitimate charities, are skimming off a substantial percentage for operating costs and profit. To my view, this abuse of emergency lines is not speech protected under the First Amendment (as it arguably would be if the charities were collecting from in-house in the manner of my local volunteer fire department members who send a general mailing to all town residents). I submit that calling any line reserved for emergency use is a highly immoral act and in many jurisdictions a violation of statute as well; certainly if I made a habit of badgering my local 911 dispatcher for a handout I would find myself wearing an orange jumpsuit for in no time and the same should apply to those of us who keep a private line for emergencies as well. So I'm afraid I must strenuously disagree with Stan's comment above. Legitimate charities need to find a better way -- and anyone who pledges anything over the phone should know better anyway; I would categorically suggest that one respond only to solicitations by actual mail, and then only after vetting the solicitor thoroughly. For those who would prey on the elderly I have nothing but the deepest contempt. As for ends justifying the means, that is an ethically untenable proposition and Immanuel Kant, for one, shot it down in flames over 200 years ago with his notion of the "categorical imperative." True, communists and others for whom ideas trump humanistic values still embrace that sort of bogus-utilitarian poppycock, but most of us outgrow it by age six or so once we learn the real-world consequences of not doing unto others as we would be done by.
