They left message on my cell, upon calling back got the same call center in India, they answered as "IRS" and, after getting my name and tele, provided an address in my state, where I never lived, for verification. When I said no, and that I would not provide them my correct address without more info, he nicely said, "Thank you, goodbye" SCAM SCAM SCAM
The recording says final notice from IRS and to call 707 932 3045. IRS does *NOT* call you. So, I called the # and finally got an answer. It was a sweet young man, most likely in India, and he admitted it was a "scam" and wondered why I should call him asking questions, when I knew this. I ended up feeling sorry for him--hearing the others answering "IRS" in the background. It's all so wrong, isn't it.
By the way, he first said he was in "South Carolina" which is what he had been instructed to say. His English was good but the accent was obvious. He did not deny actually being in India. Everybody needs work, but it worries me about old people or naive people who get these calls and are desperate to pay anything, which is gladly accepted of course.
Somehow, I don't classify impersonating an IRS (Federal) officer, lying, and scamming people out of money as a "job". Needing to make a living does not excuse someone from being immoral, unethical, and a criminal.
