Missed a call from this # earlier. Call back = "press 9 to be removed from the list". It IS one of those annoyance telemarketer robo-calls. Wish I knew who.
Rang my mobile around 2 p.m. today. No message left. I know no one in this area code, and based on the other remarks here, I can only conclude that this is some sort of telemarketer. I am sick of ignoring calls and leaving my mobile on "sleep" just to stop it from ringing all hours of the day and night.
I spoke to my state's Attorney General's office for consumer protection about these calls, especially the "cloaked" numbers that come in using one's area code and exchange (first three digits of one's phone number -not one's area code). I was told there is currently no way to track down who is calling, but they believe the calls are originate from China and Africa. I was told that these scammers have duped so many elderly people in my state (claiming to be the IRS, police holding a loved one, etc.) that it is not even a joke anymore and the FCC is looking into ways of stopping this. Just what we need---to devote time, effort, and money just to protect ourselves from criminals!!
It really is disgusting to be told that the authorities cannot help to protect the innocent public in these cases. I say if we can pinpoint the people responsible for these calls, and we can physically get to them, then we should teach them a lesson they will never forget. All it would take is a few of these b*st*rds to be made examples, and I bet most of the rest would cease and desist. We cannot count on the authorities to protect us, unfortunately.
