Yes, you can sue them. First you need to log (or go through your phonebill) & highlight all incoming calls from them. You need to establish enough evidence to file a police report for telephone harassment. I did find out though, if you don't pick up the call, the history of that call does NOT APPEAR ON YOUR CELL PHONE BILL!! If it's a cell number, set the ring tone so you know who is calling each time from that number. If you want to ignore it, set it on silent. If you want to FIGHT them & bring justice, ANSWER the call each time & keep somewhere (probably in a word document or in your daytimer) an area where you log every single call they make to you - date & time! Highlight all phone bills.

AFTER you have collected the evidence - you can telephone (look it up the regular number) the OC Register & ask to speak with the person highest up who has the authority to do something. It's likely these are just telemarketers paid very little money taking out their frustrations with that telephone punishing - at will - anyone they target who said NO the wrong way who approached them with a solicitation call. YOU are probably one of them. (SO am I) After you have the evidence - call them, tell them you're about to file for a restraining/protective order - or simply inform them about what is going on. The people calling you don't have a direct line going back to when you call the number there may be 100 telemarketers & that ONE number shows up on your caller ID, still it allows you to create evidence of the harassment (better for you). Pick your poison, inform them politely & hope they stop or go after them & bring justice for you & everyone else............ If you live in OC, (you must if you're getting the calls) you may even get the name of the person who would be VERY concerned of this problem (they are probably not aware of it) & tell them what's going on & if they do not do something you will push legal action to the fullest extent.
I've been getting calls several times a week, during my office hours.
I just called the toll-free number and was connected to Customer Service. I was told that John Townes at X6029 is the Telemarketing Manger. He states he will have my number removed.
What I found frustrating was his attempts to justify why they would be calling my cell phone. I 'must have provided that number'. When I explained that I've not used my cell number with the OC Reg he went on to research it and stated that it was tied to an OC Post subscription. If I gave that number it wasn't related to my account, a give-away maybe. In any case, I was not calling to hear why they were calling me I just wanted to be removed from their list.
I just started a one year subscription and now have received their junk phone call. I just changed my contact phone number on line. Google OC Register, enter the site, click on “Manage my print subscription”, click on “Manage Account” and log in or just go to https://subscriber.freedom.com/cgibin/cmo_cmo.sh/custservice/web/login. Once in this site change your phone number to something that will aggravate them like John Townes’ home phone number or one of their business numbers or something creative but first make sure you won’t get in legal trouble. I hear the Register is in financial trouble so maybe they will just go away and die. After dealing with them I am willing to give up my $ for the one year subscription just to have them go away and never return.
I CALLED THE PAPER, TOLD THEM TO STOP THE CALLS IMMEDIATELY AND IF I GOT ONR MORE CALL FROM THEM, I WOULD REPORT THEM TO THE BBB AND OTHERS. THE CALLS STOPPED IN 24 HOURS.
They call numerous times a day and from the posts here, I understand it is the local newspaper - the OC Register. I just canceled my registration and I guess they will keep calling me. I will pick up the next time and give them an ear full....
