Spoke during my answering machine's brief 4 second message and then it recorded the tail end of a female voice saying one short, unintelligible word. Don't know how long he/she/it waited for a response, since my machine hangs up after several seconds of silence and/or a dial tone at the end of a message and then edits the silence/dial tone out.
