Hoo, boy. The caller (from 716-748-6877) purported to be from a police organization. I stayed on the phone with him for close to 10 minutes. During that time I repeatedly (at least 6 times, maybe more) told him - very calmly, politely and respectfully - that we do not pledge money by telephone. And every time, he responded by asking me how much I wanted to pledge. It actually become amusing after a while, and it would have made good content for a comedy sketch. When I finally suggested that I might actually be talking to a very well-written computer program, he laughed. (His laugh was the first sign that he actually listened to what I was saying.) He then agreed to end the conversation, which I happiliy did.
I just received a call from this number too, no message left.
The other day, I had a call at work that went similar, but for an auto warranty or insurance. The voice was deep, crystal clear, and had proper enunciation. He started with a "how are you?" I responded with, "This is ____________ ________________, how may I help you?" The blanks is where I said my employer. He didn't seem to catch it, as it is a government agency, and he asked about my car. I said operator, and he laughed and asked if he sounded that bad. I said operator again since he sounded so robotic but not computer like... and he/it disconnected.
