I work at a university and sometimes get calls from students or parents. Because they usually call with complaints or stupid questions the students already have the answers to, I let the calls go to voicemail so I can call back with a prepared response. I usually google the phone number first so I can see who called and to find out the time zone they're in (they never say in the message).
This number (718-487-5400) was one of the numbers I got a call from recently (May 2015), and the Google search led me to this site. However, the call WAS legitimate: It was from a parent, and the callback number she left was totally different from what appeared on my caller ID. Her number had a 516 area code. The only similarity was that both numbers originated from New York City, but that could just be a coincidence.
I can't explain how or why this happened, but I just thought I'd post my experience. I would not have called the 718 487-5400 number back, based on the scam reports posted here. Turns out my caller ID was wrong.
