He asked me if I was the head of the family when I answered the call. I asked him the purpose of the call and he was telling me some story about Veterans. He didn't sound happy when I told him to take my number off from his calling list
Got a call from this number today (8/31/2016) at around 8 PM. Caller ID showed up as "ADVF 1-720-504-1552". I never answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. So the call rolled thru to voice mail. They left no message. Added their number to my phone's Call Block List.
1) They asked for a specific member of my household . When I gave my usual response of NO the individual on the other end said he'd call back . When I told him not to he swore under his breath and hung up
2) And yes ... after a bit of research this is a Scam as there is no such ADVF organization authorized as a nonprofit charity .. for Veterans or anyone else
but ..
3) Reporting them to the FCC/FTC is a waste of time as the number is a VoIP spoofed caller ID. Blocking them should they prove tenacious in their attempts being the only viable solution
Thats a good question Troy and one we'd like an answer to as well seeing as how our number is unpublished - unlisted - on the DNC Call List as well as private and confidential .
FYI Troy ... never call any number back that you do not recognize and does not leave a message ! The consequences of doing so can range from them keeping your number on their list as well as selling it to other scammers .. to your call being shifted to an overseas or regional Pay to Call number than can rack up quite a large $ amount on your next phone bill [ re; AARP ]
If your phone number has 7 digits plus a three digit area code, then that is how they got your private, DNC, unpublished number.
It is very easy to create a list of real phone numbers and those with a real live person that picked up.
Simply get a VOIP computer to phone system connection. These used to be very expensive so time back, so only large corporations could afford them, but with the introduction of Magic-Jack, Skype, and Google Voice that allows cheap to free international calls by using a computer, now anyone including scammers can use them.
Then get a computer. Computer have a really easy way of performing repeated tasks. Simply tell it go through a looped task of feeding a number to the VOIP system, starting with the lowest possible phone number and ending with the highest possible number.
Lastly, set it all up, click GO, and walk away.
The computer with dial sequential numbers and flag each one that did result in a ring tone and did result in a pickup.
After a relatively short time, it spits out a list of "suckers" to now make calls too in order to scam.
This sucker list now has value to other scammers and is repeated sold around the black markets of scammers and thieves.
Called my cell today to ask for "Brent". Didn't even wait for me to say "hello" before he started talking. I don't even know anyone named Brent, so I told them they had the wrong number. "Oh, well then maybe you can help me." Then started rambling about needing donations for veterans. I cut him off & told him to remove me from their list, he kept talking over me& then tried to claim it might take 24 hours for that to happen.
I record my phone calls, so if they call me again, I have 3 words for them: Class Action Lawsuit.
