Jury Service Scam...from Pasco Sheriff's Office
Citizens, please be on the alert for scammers calling and threatening to arrest you for missing jury service. The scammer, posing as a deputy in the Pasco Sheriff’s Office’s Warrants Unit, tells the person on the other line they have missed jury service and therefore a warrant for their arrest has been issued. The scammer then instructs the person to purchase a prepaid credit or gift card and then provide the card’s number and PIN code over the phone to the scammer. That is how the scammer gets access to your money. Potential victims have also been told to either go into the courthouse or mail in the cards to provide proof of payment.
If you receive this call, please immediately contact the Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller’s office at 1-800-368-2411 ext. 2200. You can contact the Pasco Sheriff’s Office at (727) 847-8102. Additionally, phone fraud can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357 or at www.ftc.gov.
Members of law enforcement will NEVER instruct you to provide money in any form to avoid an arrest.
Please know, if a citizen does miss jury service, the court may issue a failure to appear notice, which is mailed. You don’t receive a call or email. Also, warrants for arrest due to missing jury service are not usually issued. Potential jurors are contacted through the U.S. Postal Service and not by telephone. Do not give your social security number, credit or debit card information or any other personal information to someone who calls and asks for it.
