You are correct. This scam is an oldie. One of its original incarnations was to read obituaries in the newspaper. Then show up at the house with an item that they claim was purchased. Of course it was always double, triple the real price. It was such a common scam it even showed up in an episode of the 1950's TV series 'Racket Squad' > "The case of the hearse Chasers" (1952)
