Got a call from these scammers today claiming that it would be a Federal Criminal offense to not respond to their call, since they are The US Treasury Dept.! I enjoy calling these scammers back to let them know that we're on to them, and hoping to get some more info that would help law enforcement. Reverse number lookup says that this is a land line in Lone Pine, CA. I called the Sheriff's Dept. there, (had a very nice conversation with a deputy), and they informed me that they have received other complaints about this number, but the scammers are able to use this number without being physically located in Lone Pine. Clever.
I keep calling the number, and always the same woman answers, "United States Treasury Department" with a very prominent Indian accent. I pressed her for her name, and she identified herself as Officer Meria Bruz. When I ask her for her physical location, she stalls, and then hangs up. On subsequent calls, she tells me that I must surrender more information so that I can be sent a summons. So Sweet.
So, if you find this page, spend a little extra time bugging these folks to let them know that we're on to them. Maybe we can get some help from some really smart person that knows how to trace this stuff back to the source.
