Calls shown to be from Georgia, left a message from "valerie" stating a complaint has been filed against me in their office and need a response by end of business (Despite calling at 9pm) or legal action will be taken, no other information like a name for the company or what kind of complaint was left. Don't answer or call back!
Same story here. I get calls from them all the time. They say my name, social security number and bank account have been involved in "serious allegations". Wouldn't respond so I'm pretty sure it was a recording.
Guys, be sure of a few things when receiving collection calls -
1) If they claim to be part of a "mediation group" or allude that they're attorneys, ask for their bar number and the state which certified them to mediate or argue. If they refuse, decline or redirect the question, just hang up - they're deceiving you.
2) In any legal action that even might get taken which involves attorneys, you'll almost always receive a certified letter from the attorney before they attempt to call you.
3) If you're in certain states, like Texas, you can't be imprisoned for debt. You can be imprisoned for issuing a bad check though - so be careful if you try to take out a loan.
Report them to the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov in order to open a federal investigation on these kinds of companies. Threatening calls, harassing calls, information phishing, character defamation and refusing to identify themselves, their company and the purpose of their call are violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
