The guy said he was soliciting money for the Fraternal Order of Police from New Jersey. His accent actually sounded like he was from New Jersey, but the area code is from my section of Georgia. The "sales pitch" was very heavy-handed, when he asked me if they could count on me for my contribution today, I replied that all I could promise was that I would make my decision after I looked over information that I received in the mail. He paused for a few seconds and then raised his voice when he started telling me that I had the choice to either give $35.00 or.... at which point I hung up the phone.
I didn't like the tone he used at all, and I don't believe that this is a legitimate "cause." I fell for this scam once before, and within 20 minutes there was a man at my door to collect my donation. I called my local police chief and asked him about it and he said that there was no fund raising drive going on in our area at that time. I'll gladly give to our local law enforcement, but the "Fraternal Order of Police" can kiss my donation goodbye!
I got the call and heard "goodbye". Weird. I called the number back and some one answered, thanking me to call him back, and went on to say he was with the Fraternal Order of Police. I told him to take me off of his calling list.
FOP is a union. "Eric" is the caller and is soliciting for the headquarters in New Jersey, or so he says. He calls every year, usually hangs up hoping that you will call back so that you called him instead of him calling you. Nice logic, "Eric".
I don't support Union fundraisers. They bargain for what they want. With 325, 000 members, they don't need my support.
