This number has called me five times in the last 10 minutes.  No one speaks when I answer.  What is the point of the Do Not Call list?

Well, let me ask a question in return.
What do YOU think the DNC list is supposed to do?

No fair reading the rest of this post before you answer!

The DNC list does not automatically block calls.  Instead, it provides a list of  "do not call" phone numbers to legitimate telemarketers who pay a fee for the list.

The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations,  charities, companies with preexisting business relationships, and some other organizations (such as debt collectors), but these organizations might have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).

The DNC list  is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those people do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
It can stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.

Here is your reading assignment:
https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/media-resourc ... try/enforcement

Modern technology has given telescammers the tools to call you.
Since those telescammers are criminals, they ignore both the Do Not Call list and any request you might make.
Modern technology can also protect you, if YOU do a few simple things!
The first thing to do is buy a call blocker device, service or app.
Then, use it correctly.

Google "call blocker" for more information.

If you cannot afford or use such a tool, then:
* Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service
* Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers!  All that does is verify your phone number!  And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete.
* If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scam" (or similar).  Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group.

But Slim...what is the point in having a do not call list?  It's a joke.  After all,  it does not somehow determine which calls I want to receive and which ones I don't.  When Aunt Clara calls, the DNC Monitoring operator doesn't block the calls.  I submitted my list of acceptable and a list of unacceptable callers to the FCC people and somehow my unwanted callers always gets through!    Can you explain why  to us people who are too lazy to read?

Note: Just pulling your leg Slim.  As always....good post.

Hugh -

Unfortunately your joke is the way a lot of people seem to think.
Some even come here, and post their phone number, and tell US to stop those calls!
Others merely tell us to stop the calls, as if we knew their phone numbers.

Last year, there were about 327,577,529 mobile phones in use in the USA.
That number is greater than the population of the USA, and does not even include landlines!
Yet, some folks expect a govt employee to monitor their phone, 24/7/365

Arrrgh!
