This number called and stated that they were from Progress Energy/Duke Energy and that our electricity was scheduled to be disconnected within an hour due to failure to pay. They also confirmed our address. We advised them that they we have never had a late payment and that our bill payment is on auto-pay and that the bank showed it cleared weeks ago. They gave us another number (1-800-650-2826) to call to prevent disconnection.
We looked at our bank account and our utility account information online and saw that the payment was cleared and then called the customer service number on our Progress Energy/Duke Energy bill who advised us that our payment had cleared as normal, we were not scheduled for disconnection, that they had not called us about this issue ever, and that calling with a message like that is not how those matters are handled.
We then called the 1-800-650-2826 number the caller provided to advise them of what Progress Energy customer service stated. When calling, a Jason answered the phone stating "Account Services...How can I help you?" We told him that we had received a disconnection call about our utility services and were advised to call this number. He said, "What is your account number?" We said, "Just a second while we get it." He then said, "Let me put you on hold for a moment." He then placed the call on hold for 4 1/2 minutes and never came back to the call, and the call was disconnected.
We then went to the Progress Energy/Duke Energy website and saw that they were advising about a scam involving callers stating your electric service would be disconnected within an hour to obtain your information. We are going to call the police to report this.
This is a SCAM. If you receive a call like this, do NOT give them any information. Ask for a callback number, and then hang up and call the customer service number located on the Progress Energy/Duke Energy website or on your bill.
