I got a call today from a lady claiming that my identity theft insurance protection that I have had for two years is about to expired and that I would get a $100 gift card for renewing today. I said well the institution should be the one to contact and notify to renew. She went on to say that is why she is calling. I asked here which bank was she representing, she said all of them. All bank accounts and credit cards. Correct me if I am wrong but when you open and account or credit line, you have the option to purchase insurance through them or decline.
I then proceed to asked what I needed to do and she said she will need to take a payment from me to pay the renewal. I told her absolutely not. The bank can take that payment from my credit line if that was the case.
I then asked her does she have some documentation that I have this insurance with them, she said yes but it will take a while to receive by mail but I could get the gift card if I renew today. I told her I rather not worry about gift card and just review the docs. She said okay and hung up. When she did that, I knew then I was not getting anything as she did not even verify my address. When I dialed the number back, it was a disconnected number. Go figure. She was only after obtaining personal information.
