Claimed to be from JBS Renewal Subscription Service for Atlantic Monthly Magazine. They asked if I would like to continue to receive a Subscription to Atlantic Magazine at 70% reduced rate. They were asking for credit card information to renew subscription. Why would Atlantic subscription department not just send a renewal notice with the same offer? How can one authenticate the source? I declined the offer as I did not trust the caller.

NEVER give your credit card to some random caller, even if you believe them to be who they claim. ALWAYS call the company directly at the number on your bill.
I would think any magazine would simply do as you said - send a renewal notice in the mail. I'd also question how the "subscription department" got your phone number as I've never seen a space for it on a subscription card.
Just block and ignore these scammers.
