I had them call me today. They were quite polite... When you don't speak English to them. I ALWAYS answer the phone from a number I don't know in Spanish. Hell, my Spanish sucks too, any High School first year Spanish class student is better than me; But that's besides the point here. I always answer the phone with a 'Hola' and say nothing more. Let them do the talking. All you need to know is two more words, 'No' and 'Si'. They figure it out real quick that you don't speak their language(those racist b@stards!) and quickly hang up.

To "Sparrow": I do NOT care if they have a job. What I care about is that just because I have a phone does NOT mean anyone and everyone can call me!
On my front door, I have a sign that says "NO SOLICITORS". That means that NO ONE, not sales people, not survey takers, NO ONE may knock on my door. If they do, I can call the cops because they are breaking the law.
My phone number is on the DNC list. That means NO ONE may call me without my permission.
What part of NO do you and they not understand??
If you feel uncomfortable, then : Don't give 'em any information! Don't call them back! Just get the callers name and dates and times that they call, and each time you let them know to stop calling your number. Never give out whether your number is a land or cell line. Don't threatent! Also note that you never want anyone calling to have a definite feeling you are not at home.Also if your number is not on the no call list, call to get it on. Just look up the No Call list in the internet and I am sure you will find it for your area, if not a national number.
When folks call and you feel like they are just being somewhat "Special" if you are inclined to do so, start quoting Scripture! Romans 10:9 or Ephesians 2:8-9 which are great Salvation Quotes will do 2 things: It will help you share the Word, and if they don't want to hear it they will not call back. God's Word says it is good for correction. I believe it!
