This number continues to call me daily and my family members. They threaten you if you don't give them your info. They ask for me but claim I need to give them my birthdate, place of employment, ss#, phone number and my mailing address so they can verify they are talking to me and not someone else. When I refused they said they were sending the police to my home. I thought they needed me to verify my address.
By law, debt collectors can only disclose they are calling about a debt to the "consumer" who owes the debt without express permission of the "consumer". I use "consumer" because that is the exact word used in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and it can mean individuals other than the actual alleged debtor. They cannot not even disclose that the call is an attempt to collect a debt to anyone but the "consumer". See the following links to portions of the law (15 USC 1692):
Therefore, they need to know they are speaking with the debtor, spouse, parent (if a minor), legal guardian (court appointed or via Power of Attorney), attorney or executor if the debtor is deceased. The should not need all of the items they requested, the last four of the SSN and/or birth date should be sufficient to determine if they have the correct party or not.
Their threat to send the police is a clear violation of law and makes them highly suspect of running a scam.
