I received a phone call from Sandra Smith with Cohen Burke and Assoc. regarding what maybe Identity theft and she was out of breath as if she was running or something she gave me a case number, but get this they called my brother's house asking for me and left a different case number. After thinking about what this could possibly be, because i am very discreet when it comes to my information. I decided to look up this number 813 498 2996 and I found it to be a sure scam.
George Venders or Sanders left a message stating that there was a pending legal matter placed against my full name, birth date and social security number for a check submitted in my name. He was calling with Cowan Berg (or possibly Cohen Berg) & Associates and wanted to give me a chance to issue a statement about the case before it was refered to my county law enforcement. He gave a case # for me to refer to and said to call him back @ 866-448-2005 x-319.
Think this is a scam. Going to check out the law firm name before calling back since there is no other info. here about this #. The # that he called from was 813-498-2996 on my caller ID.
Firm name not on Google and since I don't right checks I am saying this is a new type of scam.
What I have found additionally is:
This is a common scam. Scam artists will call someone over the phone, tell him that he owes money on a loan, and try to scare or berate him into paying. It's a violation of federal law to tell someone that they will go to jail for non-payment of a debt. In addition, federal law requires that a debt collector send the debtor notices within five days after the first contact, and inform him of the right to request verification of the debt. These people didn't do any of that, so they're in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. I've also never come across a debt collector that insisted on immediate payment via Paypal.
What he can do is send them a letter, asserting his right to receive validation of the debt. If they won't give him an address - it's certainly a scam. If they threaten to call the police, they are welcome to do so. Your son should call the police himself and report them. Under Section 805 of the FDCPA, he can also ask that they stop contacting him by phone. Here is a sample letter.

I received a phone call from this number and like an idiot thought I had debt with them and gave them information for them to debit my account bi-weekly to pay my debt off. After looking at my bank statement it was a pay pal transfer. If this was a real company it would be a debited purchase. I can not find them with the Better Business Bureau or any accredidation on the company. I got screwed and don't know what to do.
ITS A TOTAL SCAM, I INVESTIGATED IT AND CALLED THEM REPEATLY, AND THEY CANNOT TELL YOU YOUR LOCAL POLICE WILL ARREST YOU. ITS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW, AND THEY KNOW IT. HAVE SOME FUN WITH THEM AND KEEP CALLING BACK, TILL THEY STOP ANSWERING YOUR PHONE CALLS. I DO IT ALL THE TIME. SCAMMERS BEWARE
