Received this text today (with the exact syntax/formatting included here) from 818-473-5621 regarding $150 in hi-fi audio gear I'm selling on Craigslist, within half an hour of me publishing the post:
"Send me an email on [email protected] if your ( Cambridge Audio Azur DacMagic and Pangea P-100 Power Supply - )still available for sales. Looking forward to your email. Thanks"

I should've ignored it from the get-go since everything about the text reeked of some kind of scam/setup, but let my hopes for a sale in record time get the better of me. I emailed her and received this email tonight from "jeanine Colton":

"Thanks for the prompt response to my text and reference to your  post am completely satisfied with it, I will be  buying this from you, so please kindly withdraw the advert from C.LIST. My husband will be overnight the payment asap but he will be paying with a certified check from his Bank and it will  deliver to you via USPS , so  I'll need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check... And am offering additional $50 with the original price to have this asap.

Name to be on the payment:
Your Full Address to mail the Payment:
Cell phone # to contact you :
And the Final Asking price:

I will make the pick up arrangements as soon as you have the check clear.  Am not be able to come with the cash and pick it up my self due to my work frame and my Kids, but  my husband will mail the check out as soon as i  have the information  and the  payment will  be deliver within 24hours..

Thanks and God Bless"

A little Googling returns a ton of similar encounters with "jeanine", using many different phone numbers but the same name and email address, and basically verbatim text messages and emails. Whether the angle is to open up email accounts to spam floods or to attempt something more nefarious with fraudulent payments I don't know, but I would definitely advise everyone else to avoid finding out!

THANK YOU!  lol  I got the exact same response, and just like you - against my better judgement I sent an email back, but I sent it from an account I use specifically for this kind of stuff, then immediately searched her email address and found this.  So again, thank you for making this report.  Saved me some hassle.  :D

Oh My stars thank you so much for this post! I'm trying to start a business I handmake coffee tables, end tables, etc. And she replied with those exact same messages. I was confused why she said "list" because it was let go the app, but she messed up and it hit me that that means craigslist. Oh my word. Thank you so much . Money is tight and that's why I'm doing this on the side. It could have been so bad and not to long ago I was scammed and lost of a thousand dollars so I didn't to Google this email address because the way this person talked, language, use of words were off to me. But thank you so much again!

Craigslist Scam:

The scam works like this.  They think your item as described is perfect.  They might ask a few questions about it, and then will pay your asking price, sight unseen, because they are never around close by to come look at it (they use the stationed somewhere in the military a whole lot).  They will give you an extra $40 or $50 to old it for them.  Then they tell you they will send a cashier’s check or money order for that amount plus extra for the “shipper”.  They ask you to wire that extra money by untraceable means such as Western Union or Moneygram.  The check or money order turns out to be bogus and you end up out the money you sent plus the bank fees.  Also, if the check is big enough you may end up being charged criminally.  Take the check and the envelope it came in to the post office and have them forward it to the postal inspectors.
In the case of them using PayPal, the same thing happens.  They send a fake email looking like it came from PayPal, get you to pay the shipper, and then find out that the e mail was fake and no money is available.
