This guy called a day after a conversation with my son, who has autism, and says he needs $800 for a broken laptop that his ( now underage ) daughter broke while illegally texting images to my son -- he said that his wife was on the way to the police to press charges, and if I hurried I could stop her. They said they are in South Carolina.

Yes it is an extortion scam being run on or by that site as well as OKCupid, both of which I l learned are owned by Match.com that has a sketchy history itself. There are numerous number threads here with the same story. Make a police report to your local PD. If the calls come from South Carolina, which seems to be popular with these extortionists, make a report there as well.
