Got a call from Rene Tyson at 561-962-2987.  She stated she was a process server for "the county" but didn't say which one. Just that she had documents and a summons to serve me.  She said the problem was she only had my work address and she would rather serve me at home.  So I needed to call the issuing attorney,  Michael Thompson at 843-633-1837, and give him my home address.  His phone number was for a completely different state.  He would then fax her the information and she would be out to serve me between 4:00 and 6:00 that evening. If she didn't receive the fax the summons would be marked as undeliverable and a bench warrant would be issued against me.  Two calls were made by this woman to two different numbers, neither of which belong to me but to family members of mine.  Both were lefts as voicemail on their phones.  They called me with the information.  I'm not sure what legitimate attorney or even debt collector would be ready to file papers on someone and not be able to perform a basic credit search to find their correct home address.  So this stinks of a scam to me.  As does the part about calling this Michael Thompson who will then turn around and fax her.  She called from one state, Florida according to the area code.  Michael Thompson is in another state, South Carolina if his area code is believable, and I live in yet a third state, thousands of miles away from either.  Unfortunately, I've been the recipient of similar calls after being the victim of identity theft.  However, this one was much more threatening.   Both numbers are VoIP numbers.  VoIP is commonly used in debt collection scams.  And actually, every one of these scamming calls I've received since the ID theft have been on VoIP numbers.

Just wanted to list some information for anyone else that may search these numbers.  It would appear they're newer since there's not much out there about them.

I received a nearly identical call yesterday afternoon... only my voicemail was from "Sue Murphy" from a number in New York (800 miles away) and she was a "private process server." She claimed that she had been "routed" to come serve me with a summons at my place of employment - she provided the name of my employer. She did also suggest that I call this "attorney" Michael Thompson (same number as yours in South Carolina best I can tell) so she could serve me somewhere other than my place of employment.   Instead, I called MY attorney.  He told me to do nothing that this was an intimidation tactic used by some lowlife debt collectors - often without any ability to validate the debt. So, I've done nothing and I now wait to see if she (or anyone) shows up today between 10-12 as she claimed they would.  I'd be interested in knowing how your situation turns out.

i just spoke to mr stone with law office of Michael Thompson yes they are a scam they tried to collect on a debt for a \BMG loan. BMG is no longer operating and giving loans they got shut down you dont have to pay them back. I am a collections supervisor i know how to collect the right way and what they are doing is the wrong way and illegal. the only way  they will get caught is to find out where they are located. either they will be stupid and tell you the truth. ( very doubtful) or have them take a payment from your account and have the bank track the merchant account. that way the feds can go in and snatch their server and shut them down. also file with the CFPB.

I don't know about you, Jessica, but no one ever showed up to serve me with anything.  A second call came into one of the same numbers they called back on the 10th, basically stating the same thing with the addition that this was their second attempt to contact me but the rest was the same.   Contact Michael Thompson at that same phone number with a correct address and meeting place "or else".   Here's the thing, the numbers they're calling aren't mine and never have been .   They have voicemail that only state the number called, not a name.  They've got no way of knowing who they're actually leaving the message with.   They're fishing.  Hoping to scare someone into returning the call and sending money.  A few simple internet searches along with some common sense will settle your mind.  Many states have websites where you can search public records.   If you're being served papers or a summons it will be there.  Check your credit.  Rarely will a debt go all the way to court without something showing up on your credit.  Calls coming from VoiP lines are classic calling cards of shady collection scams.  A legitimate attorney will likely have a traditional phone listing and will come up in a search.   Another experience  I found on a different site with basically the same story said they claimed Michael Thompson was with the District Attorney's office.   I'm pretty sure a DA or someone from the DA's office wouldn't be using VoiP phone numbers. And lastly, process servers have no vested interest in the people they are hired to serve.   It is the job of the attorney to have a person's basic information as a part of the file and then process server simply delivers it.   They don't call and try to arrange meetings elsewhere with information sent via fax.   That literally screams of a scam.
Just be smart.   People targeted by these scammers need to simply use common sense and a little easily obtained information  information.
