Received a call from this number. The number was already blocked but the phone rings a 1/2 time before the caller ID data comes across so I looked to see which fraudster was calling me now. Anyway, the voicemail indicator became active on my phone after this call but there was no voicemail message nor stutter dial tone. This has happened before and I believe with this number.
It is almost like the fraudsters have a way of sending something down the wire that activates the message waiting indicator. I don't know how they do it or why.
My only theory is if they can activate the message indicator maybe you will pick up before their call actually goes into voicemail?
And make no mistake, in my case they are not actually hitting my voicemail because the call block disconnects it after a half ring. They are sending something down the wire that my phone hears which falsely activates the message indicator. As soon as I lift the phone off the hook and get dial tone, the indicator immediately clears. This is a rare event but as I say has happened before and I think with this number in particular.
Caller ID noted: ILLINOIS CALL... called twice over past few days. Not answered. Returned the call & rec'd a "disconnected - no longer in service" recording. Scam most likely.
