Yes it is an extortion scam being run on or by POF as well as OKCupid, both of which I l learned are owned by Match.com that has a sketchy history itself. It works like this. You hooks up with someone from one of those sites. They want to text only. They want to exchange nude pictures (usually within a day or two of first “meeting”). Then all of a sudden you get a call from either the father or from some “detective”. They do their homework if they claim to be the detective by spoofing the real PD number and if available a real detective’s name. They tell you that you can avoid charges by talking with the father. The “daughter” of course got caught and destroyed something (phone, computer, door), tried to commit suicide and is hospitalized, has to go live with a faraway relative, or whatever). If you pay them certain “costs” they won’t file charges (illegal bribe and extortion). There is no underage person, there is no detective (something that can easily be verified by calling the PD and asking for that person). If you pay, they will call you back and ask for more and more money. There are numerous number threads here with the same story. Make a police report to your local PD. If the calls come from South Carolina, which seems to be popular with these extortionists, make a report there as well.
