A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:
* Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. ["Written" means snailmailed ... not emailed or texted]
Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via green dot, Western Union, or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.
IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

My wife called me from her SCHOOL (!), leaving me a message that this same Officer Mike Johnson called her about some debt, and to call the above number, i.e., 904-584-2650. Area code 904 is in northeast Florida, so it's probably a trunk relay number coming somewhere from southern or southeast Asia. My wife only heard a recording, but "Mike Johnson" had a very heavy accent. Another scammer! Time to report another to the FTC!! My , because no telling who the creditor sells the names to!
I received two call from Mike Johnson one at work and another on my cell phone yeah MJ name of the day I assume because his accent was heavy and of course the usual phrase "I pray" must be a bonus word of the day for these telescammers. I called the number and a recording came on and I left MJ an imiation of my American accent hope he enjoys the call. When are these lame arches going to be held accountable for these call I say we find out which phone companies these call are associated with and start holding them accountable for sell them number to scammers.
I just got a phone call from the same guy today and he couldn't tell me exactly who my loan was through and he said he couldn't sent me any paper information on the matter!
