I just saw a warning on Craigslist for this number.  Supposedly another user found out that when you call the number you are charged 10.00 on your phone bill.  Beware.

DO NOT CALL THESE NUMBERS!!

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU GET A RESPONSE TO ONE OF YOUR ADS AS VERIZON NOW ISSUES PAY FOR CALLING NUMBERS WITHOUT THE 900 PREFIX THAT ARE NOW BEING USED AGAINST US......THIS IS THE ACTUAL RESPONSE THAT I HAVE GOTTEN AND I HAVE GOTTEN OVER 30 RESPONSES FROM PEOPLE THIS VERIZON SCAMMER HAS GOTTEN AS WELL :

Hello I am responding to the ad on Craigslist Please give me a call at 856 554 2787 or 908 554 2787 *Don If no answer there you can leave a message 908 455-8375 <<<<<<
THIS IS THE NUMBER YOU WILL BE CHARGED $10.00 For making!! This person uses a lot of different e-mail addresses and the message you will get are identical......I called Verizon and complained as well as Craigslist and so far have not gotten a response as Verizon simply doesn't care as they make money on every call made to the scammer.....I am waiting for my 2 Verizon Accounts to expire in 2010 and will go to another carrier that doesn't support these scammers.....The only response I did get was from the Joint Antiterroristic Task Force that now has this person or persons under investigation as this might be a Terrorists latest scam on raising funds.....
If you get the above reply send it to : [email protected] and maybe they will finally do something about this scam artist....
PLEASE DON'T CALL THE 908-455-8375 as you will be charged $10.00 for answering this e-mail......

It is a scam, if you call the second number you will be charged $10 for leaving the voicemail.  Also from what I understand this guy is being investigated for being involved with terrorism.  I get daily emails from him and called once, the first number is usually a local one to your posting area.  Verizon is doing nothing about it, but keep complaining to Craigslist and places like this.  I just delete the email and put it in spam, hopefully he will run out of gmail addresses.

Wish I would have googled the number before I called it.  Called once and left a message and called again and didn't leave a message.

Verizon’s Hidden Rip-off!  Beware Pay-Per-Call Phone Scams

Here is how it works. Scammers on Craigslist are ordering tough-to-identify pay-per-call phone numbers, and then list them on ads, baiting people to call and pay exorbitant fees. Common local exchange codes for pay lines are 976, 940, 915, 556, 554, and 550. “Ordinary looking phone numbers, like (908-554-2787) that are pay-per-call, often for $10 a call. The latest scam is to contact people with Craigslist ads, asking them to call back at one of these numbers. The caller is charged $10 to leave a message on an answering machine.
Verizon was aware of this activity since at least August and has done nothing to stop this. Innocent looking local 908 exchange #’s are being used to rip off the unsuspecting public. I just got my Bill and I was charged for pay-per calls I was unaware of making. They REFUSE to reverse the charges. Verizon told me and I quote "you should have checked the number out before you dialed it". I would like to know what happened to the customer attitude that the “customer is always right”! THERE SHOULD BE A RECORDING THAT IT IS A PAY-PER-CALL AND SHOULD GIVE PEOPLE THE OPTION TO ACCEPT IT OR NOT. Otherwise do not let these companies exist. I hold Verizon 100% responsible for this activity. In New York State pay per calls are outlawed using regular looking phone exchanges for this exact reason.
Verizon you are no longer the only game in town and I have 3 phone lines worth of business to take elsewhere! I would suggest you change your attitude real fast!
