This call came in as a recording (with tremendous static) telling me that my debit card had been compromised, giving me an option to "contact the bank" option 1 or ignore, option 2. This was not my bank, obviously.
The fraudulent phishing calls that were coming from 908-464-2646 were cause by a failure to set a password on a company voicemail extension, which allowed a hacker to access the companies phone system and make thousands of outgoing calls to random phone numbers in many states trying to gain personall information from unwary parties by telling them their credit or debit card had been cancelled.
I work for the company as the Customer Service Manager and on the 15th of January we discovered that the conference room phone, an extension no one used had 117 outgoing calls in one day. I worked with our IT group to secure the system and change all passwords.
The Federal Trade Commision was notified, as was the U.S. Secret Serviceand the problem has not occured since the security update on the phone system.
