They've called me several times before. I didn't get to the phone in time so this time I called them. He answered, "Oh good, you got my message". and then launched into his spiel. At first I used to think it was really from a local police fundraising office. He sounds like a cop. Says "I'm XYZ from the Fraternal Police (blablabla) real problem of people texting while driving, would you be willing to ask your friends and family not to text and drive?" before you even have a chance to answer he's on to how they are raising money for local programs (doesn't say what they are) and for when there are tragedies that affect the police and their families. Says he's going to send me out a kit, and with my 15.00 minimum commitment, they will then have me commit to asking friends and families to donate and return the money to them. I said, I'm not willing to commit to anything however if you would send me out some information I'd be happy to take a look. He says, "Sounds like you really want to help out, would you be willing to make a 10.00 donation?" I said, "I'll be happy to read what you have to say and if it sounds like a program I can get behind, I'll donate. "Well, in order for us to have these programs we really need people to commit" at that point I interrupted him and said, "are you really with the police or are you a 3rd party fundraising company. He said they were with a fundraising organization that is affiliated with the police. I told him I felt their approach was super pushy. You are calling me, and then demanding a commitment and then asking me to do your job for you, all the while without ever having sent me any brochures or documentation that I could use to research the veracity of your claims. I think you folks should change your approach because if feels really manipulative. He replies, "It sounds like you really want to help. I'm going to put you on hold and you'll be transferred to someone who will take down your address" and he did that, at which point I hung up. Based on my calls with these folks I think the options are as follows, 1. They are a total scam and he isn't even a real person, just some actor they hired to record various statements and possible answers, which are then provided to the people doing the calls, who could be in Nigeria or India calling using VOIP. After over 5 minutes on the call with the guy I still can't say for sure he's a real person and not robotic answers programmed in for people making the calls to push buttons. 2. He's a real person (unlikely, the voice sounds the same everytime they call, but okay lets go with it) and they are a partial scam. They are fundraising for the police, but they get 90% of the money and the police get 10%. I did call back a second time, they answer without saying the organization name, it sounded like a different person answering the phone, as soon as I asked for his name and the organization name, it went to the robot voice again saying it in exactly the same way. Organization is Residtential Program Services (or something like that) and they are located on 12 Christopher Way (missed location). When I'd say, I'm just trying to find out your organization name and address it would divert back to the recording. I kept saying, I'm sorry you are talking to fast, can you slow down and repeat that. At the 3rd time, a different younger voice came on and said can you hold please, and I hung up. So there is some intel for you. Do with it what you will. Maybe they are totally legit and just have annoying methods.
