This morning I got a strange call from this number.  The caller ID said "neighbor."  However, that number is located in New York state, so the caller is very obviously not a "neighbor."  Of course, I didn't pick the phone up and answer.  Obviously, this is some sort of scam or phishing expedition.

Received a call identified as "neighbor" from this number. The recorded message stated "the following community alert for senior citizens over 65 years of age only. Due to the recent dramatic increase in injuries and deaths experienced by senior citizens from a fall, a burglary or any medical emergency, Senior Alert Systems is sending out free life saving medical alert pendants to all eligible senior citizens.  Because you were referred by your doctor or primary care physician, your medical alert system has already been paid for. Your shipping is paid for. Press one now to verify your address and your delivery date. In addition you to your new medical alert system, you will also be receiving $3000.00 in grocery store certificates to help you save money every month on your household living expenses.  The entire alert system and $3000.00 gift certificate is free of charge.  Again, press one now to verify your shipping address, press five to notify your health care provider you have refused the shipment.  Seniors, press one now. "

Clearly a scam and preying on senior citizens.  Reporting to the authorities to investigate.  Have received calls with a similar offer from 2 other phone numbers over the last year. Once I blocked the first number, calls came from the 2nd number.  That is blocked and now receiving this new call.
SCAM, SCAM, BEWARE!

Received call from this number at 9:26 AM 8-2-14. Answered and no one replied. The "do not call list" doesn't work. I get
2 - 8 of these type call everyday. Even when you don't answer, the same numbers keep calling back.

>> The "do not call list" doesn't work. <<

This post has two parts.  The =second= is for people who are interested in the realities of the Do Not Call list.  The =first= is for people who have difficulty understanding long explanations, but think the DNC list does not work.

1)
The DNC list is not a magic switch attached to your phone line, that will block calls.

The DNC list is intended to help stop calls originating from legitimate telemarketers.
* Your calls were not from legitimate telemarketers.
* Therefore, the DNC list will not stop those calls.

2)
The DNC list does not automatically block calls.  Instead, it provides a list of  "do not call" phone numbers to legitimate, registered telemarketers who pay a fee for the list.

The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations,  charities, and companies with preexisting business relationships, as well as debt collectors, but these organizations might have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).

The DNC list is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those people do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
Its purpose is to stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.  Just think ... if there were no DNC, you would be receiving incessant calls from BOTH legitimate and scam telemarketing callers!

Here is your reading assignment:
https://www.donotcall.gov/
http://www.ftc.gov/news-events/media-resource ... try/enforcement
http://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases ... lemarketers-pay

Remember, the FCC's Do Not Call site is a good one to report unwanted calls from LEGITIMATE telemarketers.   To report spammers and scammers, visit the FTC site, at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

If you receive calls even after reporting them (and waiting a sufficient time), then you should consider using a call blocker app, device or service as your first line of defense.  Google "call blocker" to see such things at Amazon or other sites.
