A guy with an Indian accent called me on 1/2/15 and said he was from Microsoft Windows. I asked what he wanted and why was he calling me from an unavailable number? He gave me some [***] reason and then said their number was 917-668-7979. He said that I am receiving error messages that my computer isn't downloading the security something online....
Told him my computer is doing everything it's supposed to do with updates, etc. so wasn't sure what he was talking about...and that this sounded fishy. He said he wanted to help fix the problem and said he needed the license number from my computer.....I said hmmmm no thanks and hung up.
Not sure of his motives - but don't think they were good.
This is a scam or social engineering. The person said his name was Jake Smith and they wanted to "troubleshoot" an issue with my computer. Eventually they want you to install a virus on your computer.
They gave this number as a call back 917 668-7979 but the number on called ID came up as 202-461-3468.

I just experienced the exact same event described at the top of the page.
Man with Indian accent called, gave no introduction to himself, and began trying to explain that my computer did not update properly and that we needed to troubleshoot it. The same number showed up on my caller i.d. as listed above, and I was given the same number as listed above to call the individual back at.
He tried to get me to install TeamViewer. I refused, saying I had not yet had breakfast, and this was more than I was interested in dealing with before something as important as breakfast.
Pretty positive this is a scam. Yes?
