Got a call too this morning. Most likely Bay Imaging Consultants. They didn't identify who they were on my caller ID, I didn't pick it up. They also don't leave a message. I guess those calling to find out why you haven't paid their bill, don't want you to know they are calling. In my case, I already mailed the check earlier in the week. If they had identified themslves, I would have picked up the phone and told them that. I would have told them why the bill was paid late since I did not understand the bill and first needed to check with my insurance company to verify it was a legit figure. Well as I said, "the check is in the mail!"

I wouldn't call it a "courtesy" call. I would call it an aggressive tactic to get people to pay their bills. It's not easy to collect on medical bills. Some people don't have insurance or the money to pay these huge bills doctors, hospitals and labs pay. And these providers are not exactly transparent in their business practices. It's hard to make heads or tails out of the bills they send you when there are multiple X-rays, blood samples, procedures, materials, etc. I think their strategy is to call, call and call some more. They will threaten to send to collections even if they have not adequately disclosed information about costs and insurance billing and reimbursement. At least that's the experience I've had with both Bay Imaging and John Muir Hospital (especially). They can't reasonably expect people to pay bills when they don't fully disclose what they are billing, for what reason, how much they billed insurance, the nature of the procedure. It's not fun to deal with the insurance company either. It's a bit of a racket and system that does not work too well.
