Told me they were from attorney's office and were going to file charges with my county for a worthless check  Urgent to call them back.  No one answers and I know I don't have any worthless checks.

1. It is ILLEGAL to claim to be an attorney of they are not  If they were, they would know that--
2. You are not warned if a summons is coming.
3. If you really had a bad check, you would have paperwork from the bank, not a cold call.

I received message from woman said she works for David Miller attorney. I called and the phone rang and rang. I received message about them repossessing my car, they have my tag number. I told them I called the people I make my payments to and they said they are going to suspend my drivers license. Something about a worthless check. I have not had checking account in at least five years. I would have got a letter from the people I wrote it to. I don't have any worthless checks. Never been to New York or no anyone in New York. Call the people I pay my car payment to, they don't know who would have called them.  I look up the number  and it is an unknown person. Stop scamming people.

Was it this "David Miller, attorney"?

www.ocregister.com/.../drugs-660996-miller-prescription.htm...

The Orange County newspaper said:  An Orange County lawyer is facing federal charges in a mass prescription drug scam that sold nearly $400 million worth of diverted drugs to wholesalers and retail pharmacies throughout the United States.

OR, David Miller could be just a name they made up.

In either event, this type of scammer doesn't care what he/she says, just as long as you are frightened by the message.  Their goal is to get you to act, and to pay money, before you realize that there is something wrong.

In your case, the "worthless check" and "repossessing" your car might have no connection at all.  If you had continued to listen, the caller might also have threatened to send a deputy sheriff to put you in jail.  Scammers will keep adding to the threats, until someone is ready to pay them $500 or so, to avoid the threats.

Anyway, an honest lender wouldn't threaten to repossess a car.  If he has a right to repossess a car, that right is spelled out in the loan contract, and there is no need to remind you.

Besides, if he threatens to repossess, there's a good chance that the debtor will hide the car.  If a debtor has defaulted on payments, the honest lender will find the car, and send a fast-hookup tow truck, driven by someone with all the legitimate paperwork, and the car will be removed from the street in less than a minute.  No threats.  If someone calls you to threaten, there is something wrong with the call.
