I answered a call like this for my parents while visitg at their home October 24. They are elderly. The exact same scenario as I've read about here. Automated call tells you to call the IRS ASAP. Then a guy (sounded Indian or Pakistani) goes through this script...IRS did an audit from 2008-2012...you owe $4000...police are on their way with a warrant...etc. I asked him a lot of questions because it seemed very suspicious. Like he offered his IRS employee number and it was 4 digits. I asked "The IRS is pretty big. How do they have only 4-digit employee numbers?" I said "I would like to speak to a supervisor". He said "There isn't one available." I said "You can have them call back." He reiterated that police were coming. I said "OK here's the thing. My whole family is federal law enforcement. This sounds like a typical scam phone call where you try to ripoff old people. I'm going to have you investigated. So if you hear someone at YOUR door, it's probably the police with a warrant for YOU." --- He hung up. I suspect that where this call eventually goes is he offers for you to settle the amount owed over the telephone, and he can stop the police from knocking down your door. It has all the hallmarks of a scam like that: artificial time pressure, impersonating people of authority, make you feel paranoid, etc.
They left a message on answering machine yesterday morning saying that they were the IRS and they were informing me of a law suit against me (by them). The message went on to say that I needed to call a number immediately. I suspect that this is the same scam that has been going on for a while now (but this time the voice was a female and had no apparent foreign accent and also mentioned no name of the person calling). It was also from a different # this time. I wonder if the scammers are getting better about reading 800Notes and other complaint sites in order to improve the scam.
