Called before to inform me that "Dennis" works with Microsoft that sent a report that my computer is infected with a virus. Informed "Dennis" I don't have a computer, "Dennis" cut the call. Microsoft reports this as a scam.
Called in May and claimed to be from Microsoft. Claim someone is trying to access my computer. I told them to call back at 5pm. I checked with Geek Squad. They are a scam. They actually called back. I called Attorney Generals office to report it. The same guy called me yesterday with "we fixed your computer in May. They don't give up.
Same as previous poster -- caller claimed that my computer had serious errors and prompted me to press 1 to talk to a Microsoft engineer, then paused for a length of time to wait for me to comply before hanging up. I get potential scam calls so I never pick up the phone unless I know the caller. I had read about this particular scam but this is my first call from them and I immediately blocked them.
Microsoft doesn't actively monitor your PC. Could you imagine a company that would proactively call all of their customers (with a caller ID of Name Unavailable, no less) to provide helpful computer fixes? It's patently ABSURD. Rule of thumb: if you get cold calls, don't engage scammers and the calls will come less frequently. This has always been my experience. Don't feed the cat. If you feed the cat it keeps coming back.
Thank you for this website. It's been very helpful to me.
