Between that and this cancer research outfit that sounds almost (but not quite) like a legitimate charity, you need to wise up. NEVER give your credit card, SS #, or any other personal information to anyone who calls you out of the clear blue sky. If they claim they're your bank and request information, call your bank and ask if they called (10-1 they didn't). The same counts for email. My motto, I don't do business over the phone or at the door; and if I don't recognize the number, I don't even pick up the phone. Nor do I open the door to any stranger when I'm home alone, notwithstanding the fact that I have an impressive dog.
It's not a scam. They're fundraisers for The Community School of Music in Mountain View, CA. I spoke with a delightfully cheerful volunteer who explained to me why they were requesting donations. The volunteer told me his name is Sean and donations are needed to raise funds for the classical guitar department at the school. Since I'm all for supporting schools and the arts (especially music) I felt compelled to donate $100.00 off of my debit card for the school's cause. I know that The Community School of Music is real, and I believe that the volunteer requesting donations was being extremely sincere and thanked me several times for pledging a donation; plus he gave me his name and that's good enough for me.
I think you got scammed. There is such a school, but I think you got scammed. Better watch your debit card charges. Good luck. Did you check with that school to see if they would actually call asking for donations?
