Don't answer! I received a call from someone identifying himself as Jeff Buckley from Google. He left a message on my voicemail saying he needed to verify my Google Places listing and there were a few issues that needed to be resolved before it could be published. It sounded suspicious but I had recently submitted a Google Places listing and had not yet received confirmation, so I didn't want to ignore it without verifying. I contacted Google and they could not find a person by that name and said Google will never call unless you ask them to, so this must be a scammer. I'm not sure what kind of scam this person is trying to pull, but stay away!
I've got a cold so I let the incoming call go through the answering machine and heard probably the same recorded message. Sounded sketchy because he has something regarding are listen that needs "my urgent attention". Right.
Also, as R stated, the companies won't use a phone to contact you unless you asked them to.
Got the same call. My SEO guy told me to ask them to give me some information from my Google Account to prove they are for real (which of course if they are calling from Google about my Google Account, they would have, right?). But when I clicked to be connected to a real person, it went to a voice mail asking me to leave my name and number.
Now this is a trick to get around the National Do Not Call List that my number is listed on..
They also said something else that I find incredible. It said if I did not verify my Google Places it MAY OR MAY NOT remove my Google Places account. This to me sounds like they want me to believe I could lose my Google Places page without actually saying I will lose my Google Places page.
Two little tricks to get around ethical issues that leads me to believe they are not to be trusted. Thanks to everyone who posted here to help others avoid scammers and thieves!
Got a call today, let it go to vm as I dont get unknown calls on my line. When I listen to the VM i knew it was just low life scum scam. If you pieces of sh*t are reading this I say fu*k you. The guy on the vm sounded like a fat ba*tard from NYC.
