I almost fell for this scam this morning, but stopped short of ordering their software because there were too many red flags. Turns out THEY infected my 2 week old NEW computer with malware so they already had my phone number. They called me this morning in a panic about malware alerts (same thing as below, they act like Microsoft 'support'' to sound legit). I ordinarily would have hung up, but I did receive a strange alert earlier in the week and an automated call on my house line about a suspicious file alert form Microsoft. I didn't pick up because I know Microsoft doesn't send alerts. I picked up this morning and the guy genuinely sounded upset. He panicked me. (I am reasonably intelligent and somewhat computer savvy, but even I fell for this one... I used to work for a large car company and there was a virus called " Í Love You'' a while back that was set to go off at a certain time... our IT people shut the whole company computer system down to get rid of it, That is why I thought maybe there was something to this guy's panic...) I took down information on which file to try to delete (by noon) and when I googled the file name, I found nothing. He called back to try to help me find the file. By this time, I was upset. He had me put a program on so his people could help me delete the file faster. By this time, I felt something was really fishy and got Best Buy on my cell phone to see if they heard anything about this. The told me it was a scam and I hung up. They crooks still had access to my computer, so I changed my email password. They STILL kept trying to call me! My computer is now at Best Buy for a decontamination. I sure wish I knew how these criminals infected my computer in the first place. They must be stopped!!!!! They are trying to sell a malware 'lifetime'' guaranteed program called Microsoft Security Essentials. BEWARE!!!!!
Have received several calls starting today. Googled the number and found this blog. As suspected, a scam. We never answer calls with CID we don't know. If legit and important they will leave a message. Sadly many will be scammed. Don't complain about the do not call registry. Criminals don't care. I like the air horn idea. Going to get mine out of the boat for the next call. Or maybe keep them on the line and have some fun with it. "Hello - I'm Bubba. I like you. Will you be my friend? Please. What's your email address? I want to send you some hot personal photos. I wasn't in prison all that long and I'm very lonely. Will you be my friend? Purty Please."
I received 4 calls this morning between 9:14 & 11:30. I answered the call at 11:30 A.M. & an Indian-accented man, who identified himself as George, told me that this was an urgent call regarding my Windows program. I informed him that I knew this was a scam & I demanded that he stop harassing me & then I hung up.
Received 3 calls from this number so far this morning but when I answerer, a woman's voice says "good bye" after saying "hello" a few times. This is getting ridiculous.
