I answered and a woman identified herself as a harris county employee working in the "pre-trial" something or other division. She continued to explain to me that she was calling on behalf of the "plaintiff" who was going to file "charges" against me that were "pending" and proceeded to offer me a phone number so I can "call and speak to the plaintiff about the charges." First, if you are going to be served by the state or anyone wishing to sue you they will not be calling you to give you a heads up. Second, a "plaintiff" doesn't file "charges" against you after they call you and let you know about it, in fact, a "plaintiff" is not going to file "charges" against you at all. In any case it would be a complaint, and again, this would require you to be properly served.
Don't answer any questions, don't verify any of your information, get in touch with your local attorney general office and let them know what happened and give them this phone number. This is a form of extortion and these people are impersonating state officers and using threats to get money out of you, or whatever it is they are trying to get out of you because it could be information. Be vigilant and don't let yourself.
I just got the same type of call giving the name of a Facebook friend's husband as the person they are looking for. Not sure if the lady was calling from a cell phone or landline but a sent a reply in text form to the number that should have her running to the bathroom.....or to make sure her front door is locked ;) I was encouraged by a law firm to just play with them.....I am just following orders :)
I received a call from this phone number as well. They would not identify themselves after I asked twice initially. Then proceeded to claim I have a civil claim filed against my SSN and I would be arrested if I didn't pay a bogus amount. They claimed if I didn't pay then I would have a refusal marked in court. I knew they were bogus & fraudulent so I contacted the Texas Office of Attorney General. After requesting that they send me this info in writing, I forwarded the email to the IRS & FTC. I advise you to do the same if they contact you as well. Its a shame so many companies are working hard to steal money from innocent, hard-working consumers.
