972-905-3314 is a number based out of Plano, Texas; They are MRS Associates, a debt collection agency.  They have been calling us for months, up to 5 times a day on any given day during the week Sunday thru Saturday and all hours of the day from 8am into the evening hours.  They NEVER leave a message.  When I finally called back, I asked them to identify what company they were and the guy said, "We are MRS Associates, and we are a financial services company."  Then he asked for my phone number.  I asked what type of financial services because I have not applied for anything.  He again said they were a financial services company and the second time asked more aggressively for my phone number so he could "look it up" and verify my information and possibly remove my number from their database.  In case you didn't catch that....that would simply be a trick to get my phone number and information...like giving away your information to some random person on the other end of the phone..not in today's world of fraud and cyber thieves.  I again asked, what type of financial services and he cut me off and said if you give me your phone number i can pull up your information.  I said I would not give out my personal information to someone or some organization that I do not know and who refuses to tell me the nature of their calls.  He said very rudely, "Then the phone calls are going to continue and we will call you again....at which point, I simply hung up.  I do not know this company.  I have not received any letters or mailings from this company.  I am unaware of the any specifics regarding their phone calls.  They have been harassing me for months.  If you owe money, NEVER pay a debt collection company.  Go back to the original creditor and offer to settle or pay in full specifically with them.  If they refuse payment, be sure to record the phone conversation and or get a letter stating they are refusing payment and with the third party information where they want you to send the payment.  In which case, you made an offer to resolve and they refused.  If you pay a debt collection company, most likely the debt has already been reported to the credit bureaus and when you pay the debt collection company they NEVER update the credit bureaus to show the account has been resolved.  They say they will but they will not.  They leave it all up to the customer to resolve on their own.  In which case, you will usually find out they did not update the credit bureaus several months later and then it will take you another 6-8 weeks to get the matter removed.

They are a debt buyer (not collector).  Rec'd letter from OC that they had sold to these "people" and they would contact me shortly to arrange payment.  They are located in MN but will use phone numbers from your area code to try to get you to answer.  They will say financial services and continue to try to verify your information.

Sorry, but whether they bought the debt or not, if they are trying to get you to pay money on it, then they legally are considered a debt collector.  That letter had better have had all the information in it that is required by law, which is:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

You need to send them this within 30 days of receipt of that letter:

You need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation letter (think of it as the best $6.47 you ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.  Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front):  http://www.consumeradvocates.org/
