Said Billerica on caller ID. Did not leave message. When I called back it said epilepsy foundation

Why would the president of a foundation be monitoring a page about scam phone calls ?

Thank you for replying to my post. There are several major concerns expressed by countless users on this site concerning the use of telemarketers by non-profit organizations.

4 of the most dominant are:

1) Telemarketers passing bogus Caller ID information with their calls. By "bogus", I mean spammed unrelated phone numbers or phone numbers that only present the name of a city & state as opposed to an actual working phone number associated with the non-profit.

2) When the telemarketers call, they fail to leave messages. Most often, calls either disconnect before an answering machine picks up, or, there is dead silence followed by a "click". This is a result of telemarketers using computers/predictive dialers as opposed to live human beings.

3) Telemarketers calling at inappropriate times...early in the morning/late at night & during commonly accepted mealtimes.

4) While the national and state level Do Not Call lists have varioud exemptions, people who register their home, business and cellular numbers are trying to send a message to telemarketers that they do not wish to receive calls at all.

Please understand that these (and other) practices infuriate the public. Similar practices are currently being used by telemarketers utilized by other charities such as the American Heart Association and the ASPCA.

My hope here is that you would be willing to discuss these issues with the telemarketer(s) you do business with and try to modify their practices for the betterment of your organization and the general public.

Unfortunately Paul, telemarketers making exempt calls do not normally have access to the Federal and State DNC lists. Unless they also conduct sales campaigns for clients, they are not required to register for access. Some may be able to register but unless they are an actual non-profit entity they would be required to pay the registration fees and access fees. Unless the law requires them to do so, they are not going to do that so in general these type of telemarketers are not going to know who is on the various DNC lists.
